There are many facets and considerations for establishing successful and enduring international business or trade relations. Our mission is to help ensure that not only are business, technical, management, and financial requirements identified and met, but that cultural, political, governmental, and social responsibility matters are equally considered and integrated into the planning and execution.

Good business practices promote better cultural understandings, establishes strong relationships, and brings our world a little closer together.

In the international business environment, while getting there may be half the fun, at the same time it can be confusing and difficult to navigate without qualified resources and the experience of having made the trip before.

Navigating the international business landscape has many aspects.  Establishing an international business or trade relationship goes well beyond just good products and services, acceptable financial returns, and maintaining a competitive advantage.

Beyond The Numbers

Local Culture and Community

An understanding of the local history, cultural traditions, and business practices are critical to developing the right business approach and strategy, as well as in developing strong relationships with all the parties.  Successful international enterprises operate in a manner that is respectful of and protects local traditions, is customary to the people, and is reflective of the unique environments, conditions, and needs of the locale.

In emerging economies, will the business be sustainable and assist in the development of the local economies? Will the business provide local employment opportunities and support critical infrastructure development? How will the business help promote educational and other community development needs?   Are new products acceptable to the local market?  Are business practices acceptable both personally and professionally?

Partner Selection

There are any number of factors to be considered.  What are the qualifications respective to the business needs?  What are their existing international activities?  Is the business ethical with open and transparent business operations?  What are their quality and manufacturing standards?  Are their products of high quality? Do they have the necessary people and financial resources for adequate support?  Are their employees treated fairly and ethically, with proper and commensurate compensation?  What is their image in the market?  What are their business and political connections?

Whether you are looking for a supplier, manufacturer, distributor, joint venture partner, or other strategic or business alliance, the selection process for the partner is a significant factor in the long-term success of the program.  Proper identification, vetting, and selection of your partner is critical.

Intellectual Property

Conducting business in international markets can present certain risks regarding Intellectual Property protection and possible product piracy.  Recognizing the potential IP risks of the local environment is the first step in assuring best practices are in place for comprehensive IP protection.  It is also necessary to review and assess any current protections in place such as patents, copyrights, trademarks, and identify any gaps that may exist.  There are a variety of local and multi-national governmental and regulatory resources and processes that are available to assist in enhancing or strengthening existing legal IP protection for a business venture.  However, good IP practices go beyond legal and regulatory protection.  There are also specific business practices, partner identification and selection processes, and other business safeguards that can be implemented to ensure the highest level of protection

Social Responsibility

Whether operating domestically or internationally, it is paramount that a business operate at the highest level of ethics with proper business practices that respect and protect basic human rights and freedoms, as well as respecting and protecting local and global environments.

In today’s world, there are a variety of necessary and critical social responsibility considerations.  Is the business going to ensure proper and safe working conditions, with acceptable compensation practices?  What consumer protections are necessary?  Are business practices open and transparent and are there safeguards in place to ensure there is no corruption, bribery, or other unethical or illegal activities?  Will the business minimize negative impact on local culture and economies?  Is the business sensitive to environmental issues, both locally and globally?  Are the highest standards in place in regards to local political involvement?

Governmental Constraints and Assistance

Whether working with large or small opportunities it is imperative to recognize and work within the boundaries of the U.S. and other international governmental laws and regulations, both commercial and political.  Experience and understanding of the these are necessary to guide you through matters such as the regulatory issues associated with the import and export of certain goods, and the ability to lawfully conduct international business without violating or circumventing government laws and sanctions.

Of course, governments are also there to help.  It is equally important to be able to identify, understand, and apply any special governmental incentives or assistance that may be of benefit and applicable to the business.
